Mobile Magic III

I'm delighted and honored that my image, "East #13," will be included in the Mobile Magic III exhibit at LightBox Photographic Gallery, 1045 Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon. The exhibit opens this Saturday, October 12, during the gallery's regular Second Saturday Monthly Openings, and runs through Friday, November 8.

Mobile Magic is a series of monthly exhibits of images made with mobile phones - explained much more articulately on LightBox's website than I could. The gallery makes beautiful, affordable prints of all the images included in the exhibits. Their website also includes a list of artists whose work is included in Mobile Magic III and an online gallery. The juror for Mobile Magic III was photographer, teacher, author, and all-around Holga Queen Michelle Bates.

This is my image that is included.

East #13

It's part of a series of aerial mobile phone images made during flights north, south, east, and west across the United States, using software that creates a faux tintype appearance. I don't think this makes logical sense, but I like the way they look, so I suspect that it makes some other kind of sense. And I've learned since making these that the first aerial photographs were actually taken in 1858 by Nadar (a pseudonym for Gaspard-FĂ©lix Tournachon) from a balloon, at a time when tintype (wet plate collodion) photography was extremely popular. I think that in making these images, I was influenced by Paul Romaniuk's series of paintings, Topographies.

The exhibition runs from October 8 through November 1, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, October 11 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The juror was independent publisher, curator, educator, and photographer Blue Mitchell, who is Founding Editor of Diffusion Magazine.

Holga Out of the Box

I'm honored and excited that my photograph, "When you least expect it," will be included in the online portion of the Holga Out of the Box exhibition at TCC Photo Gallery, 207 N. Center Street, Longview, TX. The exhibit runs from October 3 through November 22, 2013.

The juror was teacher, writer, and photographer Ted Orland, who wrote one of my favorite descriptions of plastic camera photography:

"Ansel Adams was my first and only formal photography teacher, with the hardly surprising result that for the next few years, large-format B&W landscapes became my definition of fine art photography. It took me years to realize that I didn't actually lead a fine-grained life ... I still love the images I made in those early years, but where Ansel's world was monumental and sharply defined, my world has become increasingly quirky - and decidedly fuzzy around the edges. My ability to capture that world took a great leap forward in 1990 when I discovered the Holga ... Simply put, it sees the world the way I do." (Light Leaks Magazine, issue 18, p. 27).

You can view the online portion, and preview the gallery show, here. It includes stunning work by some of my favorite artists who use the Holga.

Time in a Can exhibition in Madrid

Time in a Can is a remarkable photographic project. Artists on five continents used pinhole cameras to simultaneously make six-month exposures from the summer solstice through the winter solstice of 2011. This technique, called solargraphy, uses pinhole photography to record the apparent motion of the sun in the sky over a period of time.

Now, the Time in a Can project will be shown in Madrid! The exhibition will take place at the Fundacion Diario Madrid, Calle Larra 14, 28004 - Madrid, phone 91 594 48 21. It opens on Monday, June 24, with a reception at 8:00 p.m., and runs through July 30. A printed exhibition catalogue will also be available.

I'm excited that one of my solargraphs is included!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to be in Madrid for the opening, so if you go, please tell me all about it!

Obscura Book nears production

I'm excited and proud that my photograph, "Time moves, time stands still," was selected from over 3,000 photos for inclusion in Obscura: 121 Views.
Obscura: 121 Views is a community project, an international book of modern pinhole photographs, "a love letter to pinhole photography, and to all the artists, inventors, and alchemists working with a camera obscura."  The pictures will be displayed in 11 chapters; "Time moves, time stands still" will be in the chapter, "The Eternal." Many of my favorite pinhole artists are represented. There's more information about the book here, and a list of the contributing artists is here.

The editors of Obscura (Larissa Honsek, Eli Unverricht, Fine Nitschke, and Mila Haegele) are in the process of seeking funding through indiegogo to print the book. People who contribute can receive some nice goodies, including copies of the book and special edition pinhole prints! Details are here. I hope you'll check it out!

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is Sunday, April 28, 2013! On this day, people all over the world celebrate the magic of pinhole photography by making pictures with what the artist Christopher James called "a box of air."

The Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day website has tons of resources, including information about how to participate and listings of WPPD events around the world - including workshops at Looking Glass Photo in Berkeley and  RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco. The WPPD site also includes a gallery of one photo per artist made on WPPD - you can see the 2012 gallery here.

I will be celebrating WPPD this year by making pinhole photos (of course), and by attending the opening of the 4th Biennial Juried Pinhole Photography Show at RayKo Gallery, which includes one of my photographs (details to follow soon).
